The car is brown in one dream.
Red in another, push-pedal plastic,
wheels grate and rumble
down the drive. You disappear
at the bend, or it flips and you cry, bloodied knees, bit tongue.
When the car is brown you cry
bloody murder, slapping the glass,
your wet eyes accusing: me,
buckled up, rocking, and the women
with clipboard faces; our sisters clumped
beside you, our mother standing,
broken traffic light, at the end
of the drive. The brown car means we will all disappear at the bend.

I walk past latter-day messiahs who have the tact to crucify themselves before the rest of the world, the pride to beg for humanity, the humility to shit and piss and rave, and the gall to ask for your spare change.
